TCP Scope was developed here at TCP Data as a developement aid. It has seen
exstensive in-house use. Although used primarily for HTTP, SMTP, and POP3,
it should prove useful in a variety of other applications and protocols.
Packet dumps can be very useful in diagnosing problems in HTTP, SMTP, POP3,
NNTP, and other protocols where TCP is used. TCP Scope is a 'driverless sniffer'.
It provides a packet-by-packet dump for any designated TCP connection. As
it is purely application level, there are no drivers or 'low-level' software
that need be installed. This means the user need not be concerned about unforseen
interactions or incompatibilities. There is no need to keep drivers of this
type up-to-date.
TCP Scope displays all packets for the designated TCP stream, and ONLY this
data. It is not a tool used for network/traffic analysis. TCP Scope presents
the data needed for diagnostics of development and protocol issues.
TCP Scope is compatible with all versions of Windows currently supported
by Microsoft including the older 95/98 and NT4. TCP SCOPE NEED NOT EVEN RESIDE
ON THE CLIENT OR SERVER COMPUTER. TCP SCOPE CAN PROVIDE PACKET DUMPS FOR
ANY COMPUTER, MS-WINDOWS, UNIX, LINUX, SUN, VMS, IBM, ANY COMPUTER THAT CAN
CONNECT TO THE INTERNET (SPEAK TCP/IP).
TCP Scope functions as an invisible proxy. It is an intermediate in TCP
connections/conversations. Neither the client or server are aware of its
presence and need make any special accomodations.
TCP Scope prints packets dumps and other diagnostic information in its log
window shown below:
